GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 0647 (February 23, 1944)
CITATION:
"The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Martin F. Barrett, United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company F, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, on 20 November 1943. With all his officers and more than half of his men either killed or wounded during the fierce hostilities on D-Day, Captain Barrett, although painfully wounded himself, immediately effected a reorganization of his company and, despite the extremely hazardous conditions and the enemy's unceasing opposition, fearlessly led his command in brilliantly executed attacks against the fanatic Japanese. By his forceful and determined leadership, and his courageous action in the face of tremendous odds, Captain Barrett contributed materially to the success of our forces in capturing this vital hostile stronghold, and his zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
