CITATION:
"The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John Borich, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Eighteenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, from 20 to 23 November 1943. Repeatedly braving the enemy's shattering barrages, following landing operations on D-Day, Private First Class Borich worked tirelessly and with calm courage throughout a period of intensive combat action and, relentlessly charging the Japanese, succeeded in destroying six hostile pillboxes with his flame thrower, thereby enabling his unit to continue its sustained advance against a fanatic enemy. By his daring initiative, valiant fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to the completion of each perilous mission, Private First Class Borich contributed materially to the capture of this vital hostile stronghold by our forces and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
Borich was also involved in the taking of Bonneyman's Hill.
