MITCHELL PERRY |
The following is a verbatim response from a retired Commander in the United States Coast Guard who a US Coast Guardsman, now, attached to the USS Arthur Middleton (APA-25). |
“I was Boat Officer in charge of 8 LCVP' s from the USS ARTHUR MIDDLETON APA25. The boats were full of Marine Machine gun company. This first LCDP Wave went aground on the coral reef about 500 yards off Red Beach 2. We kept trying to get over the reef while under fire from Jap machine guns and 75mm. I contacted the marine major and we disliked being a sitting target on the reef so we unloaded the marines in water up to their arm pits and the boat returned to the Middleton for repairs and were hoisted aboard to replace the propellers.” |
