CITATION:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of Company L, Third Battalion. Second Marines, Seoond Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islnnds, from 20 to 24 November, 1943. Courageously leading his men ashore in the face of heavy enemy antiboat, machine gun and sniper fire, Captain O'Brien promptly organized his company and completely disregarding his own personal safety, greatly assisted in holding a shallow beachhead throughout the night. The following morning, under intense, persistant hostile machinegun and mortar fire, he skillfully directed an aggressive, determined attack on the south beach of the island and contributed materially to the seizure of a vital beachhead of sufficient size to enable the Division to land reinforcements and supplies. Captain O'Brien's inspiring leadership, expert tactical ability and indomitable fighting spirit during this extremely hazardous period were in keeping with th highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
