Wharton enlisted on 19 May 1942 in Texas. On 20 November 1943 he was killed in action on Betio. In his official file he is listed as buried in Cemetary 33, Grave 3, Row 1. His death certificate was issued on 4/7/44. Another entry notes during the reconstruction of the cemetaries in June 1944 his grave was recognized as a "memorial grave." Finally his file ends with, "Determined non-recoverable by field board 31 Oct 49." Interestingly Wharton is officially listed as KIA and not MIA.
