Cpl. Boeve was in H Battery, 47 Position, Special Weapons Group, 2nd Defense Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. He led a machine gun squad on Tarawa. He was wounded twice on Tarawa but never requested a Purple Heart since he said that too many good Marines died there and that he was fourtunate to have survived.
Officially his unit was listed as landing on Green Beach but Boeve landed on Red 2 by following the pier onto the beach.
