Herbert Cannaday was from Hillboro, Oregon. He is officially listed as killed in action on 20 November 1943. However until 1948 he was listed as MIA when his family recieved word that his status was changed to KIA. His wife first recieved a telegram stating that he was MIA. Three months later another telegram was received stating that he was now KIA and gave a location where he was buried. When his grave was exhumed for reburial in the U.S. another Marine was found. Most likely Sgt. Cannaday's body was never recovered from the water.
