Private Hotchkiss was the company runner for I/3/2. On D+1 Hotchkiss requested Dale Young assist him in helping a wounded Marine on the north end of Green Beach. The wounded Marine had probabky been advancing along Green Beach too close to the water and stepped on a mine. The wounded Marine's leg was shattered and nearly off at the knee. He was placed on a door and carried out of the minefield. Unfortunately the Marine died shortly after this. Hotchkiss was wounded on Tarawa.
