Cpl. Joseph T. Lawdon, 3/6
I was in the 3/6. I remember landing on Black Beach 2 to support the 1/6 at around 1600 hrs. We helped beat back a Japanese attack and then pushed foward and turned right to attack the rest of the island. during the push foward, my platoon was pinned down by a bunker, so I crawled foward alone. When I got within grenade range, I threw two. After they exploded I got up and charged the bunker with my bayonet fixed. The bunker continued firing. I started to fire my M-1 from the hip. I entered the bunker and bayoneted the last Japanese. When the rest of the platoon had moved up they found another 3 dead that I had shot. I was recomended for the Silver Star, but it was denied. We then went on to capture some of the smaller islands. On Nov. 25, we were ordered back to the beach and were sent back to Hawaii to prepare for Saipan.
