Near rows of tents on Betio, Robert's grave lies among many others on 2 May 1944.
P.F.C. Phillipe, Edwin Smith, and one other man all from around Wyanet, Illinois
enlisted in the Marine Corps right after Pearl Harbor. PFC Philippe was killed in action 21 November 1943. Below is the entry from Chaplain Willard's logbook on PFC Philippe who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was initially buried in the cemetary on Red Beach 2, row 2, grave 119.
