Captian Rose was the Executive Officer of the 2nd Defense Battlaion. He was wounded in action on Tarawa and evacuated to the USS Heywood. Most likely he died while being evacuated to the ship.
The decklog for the USS Heywood APA-6 on Sunday, 21 November 1943 reads: "1415 Conducted burial service at sea of the follwing casualties: Captain Robert Woodman Rose USMCR...."
