Clyde "Jack" Lord sailed from Wellinton, New Zealand aboard the USS Zeilin and participated in traning exercises at Efate, New Hebertes. He arrived and disembarked at Betio Island, received shrapnel wounds on November 20, and was then evacuated to the USS Lee. Later he was transfeered to the USS Solace and sent to the US Naval Hospital in Pearl Harbor.
Jack was a good friend of my dad, Gordon Stevens and visited him several times after the war was over. During one of their first meetings after the war Jack asked my dad, "Who won?" He had been wounded in either an amtrac or a higgins boat. This is why he is not pictured in the H&S 2 communicators photo after the island was secured.
