PFC H. Frank Lupien, H&S 2

"Of course I will never forget Tarawa....I probably owe to [Ed] Zekl the fact that I'm not shot full of permanent holes. I was part of the radio team, along with Clyde Lord and Berg, but Zekl wanted to go with this group and asked Gunner Blassage. They moved me to another group and Zekl took my place. Berg was killed outright, Clyde Lord was badly injured and Zekl was hit and broke both legs and lay there all night without any help. I think their landing craft took a couple of direct hits."

This photo shows Shoup's command post. The Marine on the left might be Gordon Stevens and to the right operating the radio with headphones is Bill Travis. The bearded Marine operating the generator behind them is Frank "Henry" Lupien. According to Bill Haddad this picture is probably from the third day since the TBX radio Travis is operating did not arrive until the second day.
